5 to 10 percent of the population in the United States of America are color blind. 26 percent of people living in the United States of America have some type of disability. And yet most of the things we use are not made for people who are colored blind or have some sort of disability. Videogames for example are something that does not yet have tools that allow most people who are color blind or mentally or physically disabled to play certain videogames.

There are three types of colorblindness.

  • Deuteranomaly is the most common type of red-green color blindness. It makes the green look redder. This type is mild and doesn’t usually get in the way of normal activities.

  • Protanomaly makes red look more green and less bright. This type is mild and usually doesn’t get in the way of normal activities.

  • Tritanopia makes you unable to tell the difference between blue and green, purple and red, and yellow and pink. It also makes colors look less bright.

And so, we made a program that allows people who are Deuteranomaly colorblind, Protanomaly colorblind, or Tritanopia colorblind to be able to see the colors in videogames as they are meant to be seen. From this desire to help others, we have also provided other solutions--in one GUI, all with the goal of helping gamers with disabilities. Among other things, we made it possible for people who are mentally disabled to slow down gameplay so that they can enjoy the game. And we made key remapping for people who are physically disabled so that they can play certain video games that they could not before.

About

Video games are a way for people to join together as a community and have good times together. Video games are meant to be played by all people. So what about the people who are color blind or have some sort of disability? How are they able to play if a game does not provide ways for them to play? For example, people who are colorblind are not able to play some video games because there is no setting for them to change the colors, so that they can see them as they were meant to be seen. Some games do not have ways for you to change key binds for people who are left-handed or even people with physical disabilities. And for some people who have mental disabilities and keep up with the fast gameplay in some games, there is no way to slow down the gameplay. And so we made it possible for people who were once excluded from video games to be able to play video games with everyone and to enjoy video games with the rest of the videogame community.

We at Helping Hand have made it possible for everyone to be able to play video games. We made it so color blind people could see the intended colors that are supposed to be seen in the video game. We made it possible for people with physical disabilities to play by making it possible for people to remap or change their key binds. And then we made it possible for people who are mentally disabled to play by making it possible for people to slow down gameplay.
